ADRA Malawi Introduces Transforming Futures Project to Empower Youth in T/A Njewa

ADRA Malawi has officially introduced the Transforming Futures Project to stakeholders and community leaders in Traditional Authority (T/A) Njewa, Lilongwe District. The project, funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) through ADRA Sweden, aims to empower vulnerable youth by addressing challenges affecting their health, livelihoods, and overall well-being.

The project was introduced to the Njewa Area Development Committee (ADC) and community leaders as part of preparations for implementation in six Village Development Committees (VDCs): Mzungu, Kakungu, Mzera, Mnkhumbwe, Makalani, and Mwanjema. Through this initiative, ADRA Malawi seeks to create opportunities for young people to become productive members of society and leaders of positive change within their communities.

Youth in Malawi continue to face numerous challenges, including high unemployment rates, poverty, limited access to youth-friendly Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) services, high HIV prevalence, teenage pregnancies, gender inequality, and harmful social norms. According to national statistics, young people represent a significant proportion of those affected by HIV in Malawi. In T/A Njewa, these challenges are further worsened by food insecurity, limited access to land for farming due to widespread land sales, limited financial inclusion, and weak institutional support for youth-led initiatives.

To address these challenges, the Transforming Futures Project will focus on empowering young people through mentorship, life skills development, capacity building, HIV prevention interventions, economic empowerment initiatives, and the creation of safe spaces where youth can learn, grow, and actively participate in community development. The project will work closely with faith communities, families, youth groups, and community-based organizations to ensure sustainable and meaningful impact.

The project will directly benefit 300 young people, including 200 Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW), 100 Adolescent Boys and Young Men (ABYM), 20 young people with disabilities, out-of-school youth, young mothers, and youth living with HIV. These groups have been prioritized because they are among the most vulnerable and often face significant barriers to accessing opportunities and support services.

Speaking on behalf of Senior Chief Njewa, Mr. Katema welcomed the introduction of the project and expressed optimism about its potential impact. He noted that the initiative comes at a critical time when many young people are struggling with social and economic challenges. He emphasized that the project has the potential to transform the lives of youth and contribute to the development of the entire community.

Njewa ADC Chairperson, Arnold Njolomole, also welcomed the project and commended ADRA Malawi for bringing the initiative to the area. He described the project as a positive development for T/A Njewa and expressed confidence that it would help address some of the challenges facing young people. He further encouraged community members and stakeholders to support the project to ensure its success and sustainability.

The introduction of the Transforming Futures Project marks an important milestone in ADRA Malawi’s commitment to empowering young people and building resilient communities. By investing in the health, skills, leadership, and economic opportunities of youth, the project seeks to transform futures and create lasting change for generations to come in T/A Njewa.
