Strengthening the Fight Against Non-Communicable Diseases

ADRA Malawi continues to make meaningful progress in the fight against Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) by strengthening community systems and expanding outreach efforts in Rumphi, Mangochi, and Ntchisi districts. Through the revitalization of existing NCD support groups and the establishment of new groups in Ntchisi, the initiative is building stronger networks of care, awareness, and peer support for individuals living with chronic conditions.

These community engagements were marked by vibrant awareness campaigns that brought people together in powerful and culturally relevant ways. Using Theatre for Development (TfD), traditional dances, storytelling, music, and interactive health talks, communities received life-saving messages on the prevention and management of NCDs such as diabetes and hypertension. The creative approach ensured that complex health information was communicated in simple, relatable, and impactful ways.

Health service providers actively participated in the activities, educating community members on the importance of regular medical check-ups, balanced nutrition, physical activity, and avoiding harmful lifestyle habits. Their involvement reinforced the connection between community awareness and formal healthcare services.

To conclude the events, NCD support group members and health workers conducted free voluntary screenings for high blood pressure and diabetes. Many community members came forward to get tested, receive guidance, and better understand their health status. These screenings not only increased early detection but also strengthened trust between communities and health systems.

Through these integrated efforts, ADRA Malawi is contributing to the creation of healthier, more informed, and resilient communities. Together with local partners and community members, we remain committed to reducing the burden of NCDs and promoting sustainable well-being across Malawi.
