Yet, for many years, the absence of reliable water sources in learning institutions has affected the health, education, and safety of students especially girls who often carry the burden of fetching water from distant places.
For years, girls at Lunjika Secondary School in Mzimba District and Matandani Technical College have lived with this daily struggle. Long hours spent walking to fetch water consumed valuable study time, exposed them to risks along the way, and limited their ability to focus on their education. Many endured fatigue and missed classes, while hygiene and sanitation at the schools remained a constant challenge.
Today, that reality has changed for good. Through the leadership of ADRA Malawi’s Acting Country Director, Dr. Martha Kamwiyo, and with the generous funding support from Dubai SDA Central Church, two life-changing water projects have been completed and officially handed over to the communities of Lunjika Mission and Matandani Technical College.
At Lunjika Mission, ADRA Malawi handed over a newly drilled borehole located at the girls’ hostel of Lunjika Secondary School. This marks a turning point for the students who previously struggled to access clean water. With the borehole now providing a steady supply of safe and clean water, the girls can focus on their studies, maintain good hygiene, and enjoy a healthier and safer learning environment.
ADRA Malawi’s support to Lunjika Mission extended even further. The organization also restored the water supply system at Lunjika Mission Health Center, where the existing solar-powered pump had stopped working. With funding from Dubai SDA Central Church, ADRA Malawi replaced the malfunctioning unit with a brand-new solar pump, installed new solar panels, and fully rehabilitated the water system. This intervention has restored a reliable flow of clean water to the facility benefiting patients, health workers, and the wider community. The project has not only improved the hospital’s hygiene and service delivery but has also strengthened infection prevention and control within the facility, ensuring that patients receive care in a clean and safe environment.

A similar transformation has taken place at Matandani Technical College, where ADRA Malawi also handed over a newly drilled borehole at the girls’ hostel. For many years, students at Matandani faced challenges in accessing clean water, forcing them to walk long distances and often disrupting their studies. The new borehole, also funded by Dubai SDA Central Church, now ensures that students especially young women have reliable access to safe water right at their doorstep. With this improvement, life on campus has become easier and healthier. Students can now focus on their academic and technical training, maintain proper hygiene, and live in dignity without the daily burden of searching for water.
These two projects stand as powerful examples of ADRA Malawi’s commitment to transforming lives through sustainable and community-driven development. By investing in clean water systems, ADRA Malawi is not only addressing a basic human need but also restoring dignity, hope, and opportunity to communities that have long struggled with water insecurity.
“Clean water changes everything,” said Dr. Martha Kamwiyo, Acting Country Director for ADRA Malawi. “It brings dignity, it brings safety, and it gives students and families the opportunity to focus on what truly matters education, health, and building better futures.”
ADRA Malawi extends heartfelt gratitude to Dubai SDA Central Church for their unwavering generosity and partnership. Through their support, hundreds of students, patients, and community members now have reliable access to clean and safe water. Their contribution serves as a powerful reminder that compassion, when turned into action, can change lives and build stronger, healthier communities.
Together, we continue to serve humanity so that all may live as God intended healthy, empowered, and full of hope.
